MELONS (Cucumis melo) Eastern Melons; Casaba - Golden Beauty; (ab) A quality Casaba type,very sweet white flesh,tough golden rind,& a good keeper, can be stored well into the winter. Casaba-Sungold Casaba; (ad) A full-size casaba melon that ripens 3 - 4 weeks ahead of many other casaba varieties. A high-yielding melon Sungold vines are somewhat shorter than other casabas and can be spaced closer. The slightly wrinkled skin turns a golden yellow when mature. When fully ripe,the white flesh is tender with a mild sweet flavor. Like other casabas,it must be cut from the vine. The season must be relatively dry and fairly warm. Collective Farm Woman; (ac) Ukraine melon ripen to a yellowish-gold & the white flesh has a very high sugar content. Canton Giant; (ac) A giant South China variety. Large,long fruit can grow to 40 lbs.. They have mild,tasty,white flesh & a deep green rind Chiang Shin Improved; (ac) A short fruited "hairy gourd" type that is picked when 6" long or less. The dark green fruit are excellent for cooking. This early variety has good tolerance to heat. Doan Gwa; (ac) Large, round squash-like fruit have a white wax on them when mature. Fruit is used in soups & other Oriental cooking. Harvest young & cook like squash, mild & tasty flavor. Early Silver Line; (ac) Beautiful,oval-shaped,yellow fruit weighing 1-2 lbs.with lovely silver stripes. The white flesh is very crisp & sweet. This is a Korean variety. Very productive and quite early. Israel; (ac) Ogen type,green flesh,good yields & very fragrant. Metki Dark Green Serpant Melon-(Armenian); (ac) Armenian melon,that is used like a cucumber. Picked small(18" or less), it is very mild & tasty,but the fruits can grow to over 3' long! Easy to grow, & good yields. Metki Painted Serpent Melon; (ac) Very long fruit with dark green and pale green stripes,excellent flavor, a Armenian-type cucumber that is actually a melon,very unique. Metki White Serpent Melon; (ac) The light green Armenian cucumber that is botanically a melon,sweeter & crisper than regular cucumbers,pick when under 18" for best taste. Delicious and easy to grow. Oriental Green Strip; (aq) This is a pickling melon variety from China. In Asia,there are many melons that are used for pickles,as they stay crisper & more delicious than cucumbers,when preserved. The fruit are shaped like a long,thin,light-green cucumber. Harvest when 8"-12" long for preserving or fresh eating. The plants produce fruit in less than 50 days. These melons are tender & crisp. Plum Granny or Queen Anne's Pocket; (aq) Beautiful,ornamental fruit are yellow with deep orange stripes,& only 2”-3" long. They are grown for their wonderful fragrance. Sakata's Sweet; (ac) An Asian variety. These small 3"-4" round melons are very sweet with a high sugar content. Crisp, and crunchy - they have edible skins. Their small size and brilliant golden rind make them very attractive. This is a fine Japanese variety . Small Persian; (ac) Old-time melon,with a sweet,bright orange flesh & a dark green rind. Distinctive flavor! Thai Golden Round (aq) The plants are very productive,producing big 6 lb fruits that look like glowing orange pumpkins. The green flesh is sweet & tastes something like pineapple and papaya flavour. Tigger; (ac) The fruits are vibrant yellow with brilliant fire-red,zigzag stripes,(a few fruit may be solid yellow). European Melons Amarillo Oro (ab) Beautiful,golden-yellow oblong fruit grow to 15 lbs. & have sweet,creamy white flesh. A winter type. Boule d'Or (Golden Perfection) (ac) Very sweet,pale green flesh is just marvelous. Yellow & loosely netted, a very beautiful melon. Charentais Melons (ac) A French,2-3 lb. melon with light,grey-green skin & bright,orange flesh. Piel de Sapo (Toad Skin); (ac) Oval,8" long fruit,skin mottled green & yellow,somewhat like a toad’s skin. Sweet, white flesh has a very good taste;one of the earlier maturing winter melons, but still rather late. From Spain. Prescott Fond Blanc; (ac) Beautiful French melon. The fruit is 4-9 lbs.,very flattened & ribbed,with warts & bumps. Melons have grey/green skin turning straw color;flesh is salmon-orange. The flavor is very rich if picked at perfection & the fragrance is heavenly. Rugoso di Cosenze; (ac) A beautiful "Amarillo Oro" type melon from Italy.
